Oakton Boys Beat Mt Vernon but Lose Close Meet with TJ
ANNANDALE, VA - As they closed out the first half of the regular season, Oakton battled it out with Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson High Schools in their only tri-meet for the season. The boys suffered a tough loss to Thomas Jefferson with a score of Oakton’s 156 points to Thomas Jefferson’s 158 points, but also added another win under their belt over Mount Vernon with a score of 243 points to 68 points.
This year was the third consecutive year of tri-meets for Oakton, but the first against Thomas Jefferson and Mount Vernon. In the past two years, the Cougars have hosted the tri-meet with James Madison High School and Langley High School. With three teams, the meet has to run and be scored differently. Instead of one heat of eight swimmers, there are two heats of six. For scoring purposes, they take the swimmers of two of the teams and compare their times for the event and determine points from there. As an example, for the 100 freestyle, they would compare the times of the four Oakton swimmers and the four Mount Vernon and swimmers and score the eight swimmers like a normal meet.
Winter break is starting for all Fairfax County schools, but Oakton will be taking advantage of it to keep practicing for their next meet. After the vacation, the Cougars will be returning to Oak Marr Recreation Center to swim the Centreville High School Wildcats on Friday, January 5 at 8 pm for senior night.
